Teaching Philosophy

I believe that teaching art is a combination of instruction in art skills and the facilitation of the creative process. Learning to draw and paint takes lots of learning and practice. Creative expression takes opening up and letting go. Both need to exist to create good art.

Another important part of developing as an artist is finding ways to be kind to oneself and to allow all the bumps and challenges along the way. I work with students to enjoy experimenting and laughing at art. If we get too tight and serious about it all, our work will be tight and serious.

Workshops at Daniel Smith, Expressive Still Lifes: This workshop offers a wonderful opportunity to learn to paint still lifes, or any subject matter, more expressively and personally. Discover techniques that lend themselves to increasing the tendency to experiment, loosen up, and be more expressive. Learn how to use collaging, underpainting, and layering techniques as you bring more life to your paintings and more enjoyment to your painting process. This workshop is open to participants with all levels of experience.
