Artist's Statement:
I paint what fascinates me. My subject matter is a moment in time, a glimpse of life. It may be a hen and her chicks or a woman walking her bicycle. For many years I have been painting seed pods. Pods are little packages of life. They contain seeds that seem insignificant but contain the life of a plant within. As I paint, my intention is to instill each canvas with enthusiasm for life through my use of light and color.
Painting offers me the practical and metaphorical reminder that there are always opportunities to move forward and change. Working primarily with acrylics, there is no such thing as a "mistake." I add another layer, another texture, and the painting gradually emerges.
Using acrylic paint, collaged materials, oil bar, pencils, crayons, and other materials, I will often have ten or more layers of media, with the more subterranean layers peeking through to add depth and texture. I enjoy the interplay of complements and the use of grayed colors against bright. The richness of color used by the Impressionists and Post Impressionists has influenced my style, as has the sense of design in the works of Richard Diebenkorn and William Cumming.
I jump in with both feet, and have been called fearless by my contemporaries because of a tendency to paint fast and with great enthusiasm. Each painting is a journey, a challenge, and a wonder.

Jacqui has studied at Gage Academy of Fine Art and with many nationally known artists. She's a full time artist and art instructor and has worked in many capacities to further the arts as a board member of arts organizations and as director of Art for Kids, supporting art for children in the Northwest. Beck lives in Seattle, Washington with her husband and two daughters.
